Course Description:
This course provides an applied, clinical understanding of how brain injury affects behavior, why these behaviors emerge, and how to manage behaviors after brain injury. Participants will learn to recognize common and often overlooked behavioral presentations, accurately document behaviors, and apply foundational principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to improve safety, patient engagement, and rehabilitation outcomes.
The course emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, the importance of understanding behavior functions, and the use of reinforcement-based approaches that reduce coercion, strengthen rapport, and support successful placement, progression, and recovery.
Following the presentation, participants should be able to:
1. Identify at least five common behavioral presentations associated with brain injury
2. Explain the basic difference between ABA and behavior modification and why the right approach matters
3. Describe the four primary functions of behavior
4. Discuss the basic behavioral principles, the “A, B, C’s”
5. Apply evidence-based interaction strategies to enhance patient engagement and outcomes.
